Marian House Independence Place Project
Consistent with our mission to help homeless women move from dependence to independence, Marian House is redeveloping the former school, rectory, and convent buildings of Blessed Sacrament parish in the Pen Lucy neighborhood of Baltimore City. The goal of Independence Place is to create a “campus” of supportive housing for homeless women and families that will foster stability, wellness, and maximum self-sufficiency for all of its residents.
Last year, Marian House raised the necessary funds from government and foundation sources to renovate the former school building into a 22 unit apartment building to provide permanent, supportive housing for homeless women and children. Now, we are undertaking Phase 2 to rehabilitate the former convent and rectory buildings to provide transitional housing for homeless women and their families. This project is estimated to cost $1.5 million and to date, we have successfully raised $750,000.
The former rectory building is a three story building that will be renovated to contain 8 bedrooms capable of housing a minimum of 3-4 homeless families (depending on family size). Each family will have private, connecting bedrooms and an adjoining bathroom. There will be a communal kitchen, dining room, living room, porch, laundry area, and basement playroom. There will also be offices for Marian House staff.
The former convent building is a three story building that will be renovated to contain 9 bedrooms capable of housing at minimum 3-4 homeless families (depending on family size). Each family will have private bedrooms with communal bathrooms, living room, kitchen, joint dining room/laundry area, and a porch. There will also be offices for Marian House staff.
